Las Vegas, Nevada —— At the top of this post, watch our scouting video of New York Mets #1 prospect shortstop Amed Rosario, taken from his play during an April 27-30 series with the Las Vegas 51s in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League against the visiting Albuquerque Isotopes. Entering play on Wednesday night with the 51s, Rosario was slashing .406/.454/.531/.985 with seven doubles, a home run, eight walks, and seven stolen bases in his first 96 PCL at-bats.

He’s still just 21 years old.

Amed Rosario scouting report notes

If the first month of play in the Triple-A Pacific Coast League is any indication, Amed Rosario is ready for a shot at the big leagues with the New York Mets. The shortstop, who is the Mets’ top prospect and the #3 prospect in all of baseball per MLB Pipeline, has crushed PCL pitching and shown an advanced approach at the plate with good contact skills and improved strike zone discipline—the combination of which will very soon get him to New York City.

Rosario’s best tools are likely on defense (more on that in a minute), but his offensive game has come a long way in a short amount of time considering he’s still just 21 years old. I’m not as bullish on him growing into significant pop as some other evaluators, but Rosario’s contact skills are phenomenal and he has good bat speed and great plate discipline. That combination could turn him into a shrewd gap-to-gap doubles hitter at the big league level. He’ll fill out in his wiry, athletic frame some, too, and that’ll help with a bit of over-the-fence power, but his value will come more as a line drive hitter with above-average speed than it will trying to be a power slugger with any regularity.

Rosario has the patience and mature approach you don’t see much in a 21-year-old kid, especially at Triple-A, and it’s to the point in Las Vegas where he’s overmatching much of the pitchers he’s facing, no matter how much older and more experienced they may be. There will be an adjustment period here whenever he is called to the big leagues, but long-term, Rosario has above-average hand-eye coordination and can put the barrel on the ball with regularity while somewhat limiting the swing-and-miss in his game. He’s comfortable working deep counts and can draw walks. All of that will serve him well as a player who could sit atop the New York Mets’ batting order for a long time to come.

Defensively, Rosario ought to be just fine staying at shortstop in the big leagues. His range is exceptional, his footwork and soft hands are above-average, and he has a plus arm that can fire off throws from deep in the hole with relative ease. Even as he fills out a bit with age, he ought to stick at shortstop in the coming years and, sooner or later, find himself the everyday guy at the six-hole for the New York Mets. He’s a natural leader on defense and communicates well with other infielders and pitchers on the field as needed.

The only question left now is, well, when will Amed Rosario get the call? Whether it’s sooner because of his exceptional talent and early returns in Vegas, or later to account for service time strategies on the big league side, it’ll be well-deserved for this athletic prospect who quickly may become one of the game’s high-profile young stars.
