New York Mets: Amed Rosario Scouting Report, June 2017

Salt Lake City, Utah —— Entering play on Tuesday night, New York Mets top infield prospect Amed Rosario is slashing .337/.379/.494/.873 for the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s with 14 doubles, six home runs, 15 walks, and 44 strikeouts over 255 at-bats across 62 games in 2017. Amed Rosario Scouting Report — Offense

Amed Rosario is an aggressive hitter, and comes to the plate looking for a hit every single time. Seems to really study the pitcher he’s facing in between at bats and can draw a walk if he can see a pitcher is losing command. Explosive swing that’s quick through the zone and covers all of the plate. His swing packs a punch but won’t be enough to hit the ball over the fence consistently, more of a line drive machine with good bat speed. His line-drive approach lets him rip balls to the corners and gaps with ease and his speed is plenty enough to collect lots of extra base hits. Extremely fast on the bases. Seems to struggle some with his first step on steals, but his speed is elite when running the bases. He’ll be able to score from second and go from 1st-to-3rd on singles with ease, and speed will likely forever be a part of his game thanks to great footwork and a thin, wiry frame that shouldn’t add significant weight long-term.

Amed Rosario Scouting Report — Defense

Amed Rosario plays very loose and is ready to go in either direction before each pitch, great anticipation and athleticism in maneuvering around his position at shortstop. Both his arm and his range are above average, and he’ll stick at short because of it. Fantastic instincts on defense, too, and should become one of the New York Mets’ best defenders immediately upon reaching the big leagues. Arm has plenty strength to last, too, and shows good accuracy with a feel for opposing baserunners and game situations.

Very laid back on defense and at the plate. Truly has fun while he plays and I think it has a big affect on his success. Doesn’t sulk when things aren’t going his way, isn’t afraid to smile on the field, jokes around with his teammates and seems to have a very positive influence. Particularly close with first baseman Dominic Smith—a good thing for the New York Mets, as both should become mainstays in the big leagues soon enough.

Amed Rosario Scouting Report — Projection

Amed Rosario will be an everyday shortstop whenever he gets called up, likely sooner rather than later this year. A phenomenal defender with great footwork and hands at shortstop, he also displays an ability to get the barrel on the ball and should hit for average eventually in the big leagues. More mature than his age would indicated, and should become a crowd favorite, too, for his ability to have fun and enjoy the game while playing it at a high level. Unlikely for significant plus power and he won’t bulk up considerably as he ages, but bat should be a threat because of his contact skills and then above-average speed on the bases. One of the more exciting players in all of minor league baseball right now; only a matter of time until it translates to the Big Apple.
