Orem, Utah —— Entering play on Friday night, Los Angeles Angels outfield prospect Brandon Marsh is slashing .500/.545/.833/1.379 for the rookie level Orem Owlz with three doubles, two triples, a home run, two walks, and four stolen bases against just five strikeouts in 35 plate appearances in 2017. I observed the Los Angeles Angels’ top prospect and former second round (2016) pick twice already in 2017; below is Baseball Census‘ full Brandon Marsh scouting report, including video.

Brandon Marsh Scouting Report — Offensive Notes
He’s very raw in almost every aspect like you’d expect of a high school product playing short-season ball, but the potential is very obvious. Lean body, looked noticeably more athletic than other players on the field in my viewings. Very engaged approach at the plate, but not overly aggressive. High energy player. Swing looks ready to explode during every pitch; uncoils with great bat speed. Quick, powerful swing that can cover all of the plate. Above-average contact skills, should keep strikeouts relatively low long term thanks to bat-to-ball feel. I don’t think he’s going to be an exceptional over-the-fence power hitter, but he has potential to be a 15-20 homer guy. Easy gap power that’s aided by his speed.
Brandon Marsh was a high-level football wide receiver in high school, and it definitely shows on the bases. Powerful strides, and he covers a lot of ground with each step. If the power develops just a bit, he has the potential to put up some 20-20 seasons down the line, because his speed will play for years to come.
Brandon Marsh Scouting Report — Defensive Notes
As a former wide receiver, you definitely see the impact that has on his defensive work. He can cover a lot of ground quickly with an above-average throwing arm that also shows off decent accuracy. Played primarily right field in high school, but center field would the best place for his skill set right now; his above-average speed is a slightly better tool than his arm strength and that’d make him a more ideal fit in center. He’s showing some versatility so far with the Los Angeles Angels, playing both center and right field. That should continue at least for a couple years as he finds his fit.
Brandon Marsh Scouting Report — Projection
It’s always tough to project teenagers in rookie ball from just a couple viewings, but Brandon Marsh has an opportunity to be a special talent, especially considering the relatively barren farm system the Los Angeles Angels have right now. His athleticism will play up and his engaged, advanced approach at the plate should only improve in time. He’s transitioning well to pro ball in the short-term, and while many tests yet await him over the next several seasons, Brandon Marsh is an exciting, athletic, rangy ballplayer who is going to be deserving of a long, long look down the line. Above all, he’ll be a fascinating player development follow for us over the next several years.
