Sam Anthony Scouting Report

Second Baseman/Center Fielder
Western Oklahoma State College

Tool (PV/FV)
Notes & Comments
Hit (40/55)
Promising hit tool; big leg kick for load, but keeps balance well and fires off with very quick hands and a short stroke through the ball. Sam Anthony reminds me a ton of Toronto Blue Jays outfield prospect Jonathan Davis‘ swing mechanics. Great hand-eye coordination and good feel for the barrel; ability to adjust mid-at-bat and hit situationally. Some feel for lifting the ball in the air and will hit line drives gap to gap; natural orientation towards center field with easy line drive power gap to gap; not as much down the lines. Good shot to become above-average professional hitter at ceiling.

Power (30/45)
Not a ton of over-the-fence pop likely ahead at the next level, but he’ll sneak a few out along with tons of gap-to-gap line drive production aided by plus speed. Plate coverage and up-the-middle/all fields approach will help with doubles power, as well; some sneaky home run pop on occasion that could flourish a bit as he builds out into his adult frame, but can’t see it pushing past average.

Glove (50/60)
Saw him make two particularly advanced diving catches in center field in my limited looks; runs extremely well in the outfield and moves in on balls very, very well. Great athlete; can make up for lost read time with great foot speed, but generally appeared to get great reads in the outfield anyways, particularly on difficult line drives hit directly to him in center. Plays relatively shallow there and can run in on most anything hit in the air. Didn’t see him play any infield during my March look; with exceptional athleticism and advanced feel for center, I’d have loved to have seen him transition back to infield work.

Arm (40/50)
Good arm strength for his role in center field; accurate to targets with consistency in mechanics. Didn’t see him throw a ton — again, would love to see his arm from second base — but broadly speaking, it’ll play in center and will be more than enough without standing out, especially when combined with his speed.

Speed (65/75)
Timed 4.05 up the line from the RHH box; 4.30 on the turn at first; 7.71 home to second on a double. Kid flies. Tons of stolen base success early in his career, no doubt in part due to raw speed, but he’s an attentive and aware base runner and should turn into a legit, nuanced pro stolen base threat even as opponents get better. Very quick first step; glides up the line and in the outfield; runs easily.

Notes
Chiseled; will add muscle but already very well defined musculature as a base; listed at 5’10” with no weight given on roster; may be slightly shorter and certainly very lean. Plenty of room to add weight. Older brother Josh Anthony was a star at Western Oklahoma State College in 2015 and 2016; currently starting at Auburn, and drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 2016; likely a 2018 MLB Draft pick himself.

MLB Draft
Legitimate MLB Draft follow for 2018; now in second huge year at Western Oklahoma State College and it figures he’ll get a draft look here just as his brother did two years ago. Abundant athleticism with enough physical upside and the makings of a few loud tools that should entice a pro organization; if he’s not taken in the 2018 MLB Draft (or he doesn’t sign), there’s definite Division I-quality talent here.

OFP (55/60 FV)
Loud tools with abundant athleticism and enough upside both at the plate and defensively to really push him towards an above-average everyday outfield role. Similar to Elijah Greene, Sam Anthony really could flirt with a 60 FV ceiling in pro ball, but he’s a few inches below ideal size and has some work to prove everyday physical durability through the grueling minor league lifestyle. Athleticism is for real and tools are loud, though; kid’s a ballplayer. MLB ETA: 2023.
