Allan Berrios Scouting Report

Catcher
Western Oklahoma State College

Tool (PV/FV)
Notes & Comments
Hit (40/50)
Open stance at start with high hands before load; large leg kick to closed landing spot with hands still high and tight; quick bat path through the zone with good bat speed. Mechanics suggest he’ll get tied up on inner half against better velocity, but decent feel for timing in my limited looks. Markedly changes approach with two strikes; kills the leg kick completely, widens out base and does a small toe tap for timing; not nearly as high hands, and focuses on putting the ball in play as opposed to trying to do damage early in counts. Promising contact skills.

Power (40/45)
Some sneaky home run power; swing tailored for gap to gap line drive production, but he can really get on balls to his pull side with some leverage to lift the ball with authority; moderate barrel manipulation aids power, along with great leverage through big stride and swing mechanics. Tendency to jump out ahead to pull side and sell out for power; not as much plate coverage away or as consistent an ability to drive the ball to right field; some holes in swing will be exploited, but sneaky raw pop.

Glove (45/50)
Already shows good feel for blocking and framing; very low sets behind the plate with good athleticism and flexibility; strong targets for pitchers and flashes good fundamentals receiving the ball. Soft hands. Natural leader with good feel for relationship with pitchers from behind the plate; reliable hands with consistency blocking the ball and keeping it out in front of him; fundamentally pretty sound; generally calls his own game.

Arm (45/50)
2.02 pop time to second base; fairly strong arm with good accuracy; loses some velocity and carry down to second at times and will need to improve his pop time against better competition, but he’s right at/ahead of where he should be at this point in his career. Efficient throwing mechanics; tight, short arm action with quick twitch up out of crouch; finishes well. Athleticism goes a long way here with good foundation upon which he can cut down pop time.

Speed (35/40)
Timed 4.40 out of the RHH box; 8.29 home to second on a double. Objectively below-average speed, but he’s a pretty good athlete for a catcher and should be a decent baserunner in time with development. Good overall athleticism aids the profile considerably here.

Notes
Bilingual; good Spanish; natural team leader with plenty of vocal leadership skills on display from behind the plate. Calling his own game right now with decent handle on situations and pitch calling; seems to have a very good relationship with his pitching staff. Intense; good competitor; up quick out of his crouch on balls in the air and balls in play; hustles well. Listed at 5’11” and likely a little bit shorter than that; lean and thin with plenty of room to grow into his body, but somewhat undersized through core and lower half, and will need to really prove durability behind the plate at the next level.

MLB Draft
Probably a lesser chance at being selected in the 2018 MLB Draft, but already building out the foundation for a potential pro career after his four-year stop in another season or two. Size/durability questions will inevitably pop up when he’s considered, but there’s a solid base of tools across the board that should serve him well in coming years. Athleticism really helps here; pretty good overall athlete, especially for a catcher.

OFP (45 FV)
Enough by way of tools across the board to function as a platoon/part-time catcher at ceiling; with durability questions around undersized frame, part-time/backup role may be ideal for him as well as within reach. Organizational depth floor; good foundation for catching work already with pro opportunity to likely come later rather than right after Western Oklahoma State College; will develop into mature, poised catcher in another season or two. MLB ETA: 2024.
