Notes — Feb + Apr 2018
Thin, lean build; undersized, but should fill out a bit towards modest strength eventually … Runs well; long strides considering size; quick first step, overall good athlete … Generally takes good at-bats; will work count and tends to track pitches well. Held his own competitively at the plate a few times when facing down Tanner Brubaker’s two-hit dominance in April. Short stroke; undersized without a ton of natural strength or power, but good feel for the barrel and full coverage of the plate. Fair amount of hard contact in spite of stature; well-balanced contact guy who keeps it simple at the plate and will work well as a top-of-the-lineup table setter … I like him a LOT in center field; moves back on the ball extremely well and gets great first steps off the bat. Has to deal with a tough afternoon sun at Cypress College’s home park that sets right above home plate, and he’s learned how to get good jumps and consistent reads while shielding himself; credit for quickly learning how to be an above-average defender in center despite relentless sun … In my April look, Jesse Lopez ran a long way on a fly ball in the left-center field gap, dove for it, fell short, but didn’t panic and got right up to chase down the ball; threw into cut-off man and hit him in the chest on a line; relay man threw the hitter out at third. Never panicked when he dove and missed the ball, got right up and chased it down and executed a perfect strike to his cut-off man; maturity there to finish the play without panicking and stay within himself without trying to do too much to come back from tough situation … All around solid player; unfortunately undersized and will have to battle that for the rest of his career, but Jesse Lopez is a pretty good ballplayer and should have a few options ahead to continue playing baseball after Cypress College.
