college of the sequoias baseball prospects news 1 sagun gainey scouting report
Prospect: Sagun Gainey
Position: Right-Handed Pitcher
Organization: College of the Sequoias
Height/Weight: 6’1″, 165 lbs.
Bats/Throws: R/R
Age/DOB: Sophomore (Two-Year; Long Beach State commit)
Acquired/Hometown: Tehachapi, CA (Tehachapi HS)

April 24 — Physically and mechanically very similar to the guy I saw pitch last year as a true freshman for College of the Sequoias; sat 88-91 with his four-seam fastball early in my April look, backing it up with an 85-89 two-seamer, a 77-81 changeup, and a 73-76 curveball; infrequently flashed cutter, too, but never got a read on it. Later in game fell back to 84-87 on fastball after hitting wall in fifth inning, particularly when working from the stretch, but even then he could still reach back when he wanted to and hit 91 — though at that point it often flattened out up in the zone without plane or late life resulting in some hard contact … Clocked him 1.20-1.30 (1.25-1.27) to the plate with runners on first base … Decent depth early on curveball; feel for the pitch with 12-to-6 look and enough trust there to throw it against RHH and LHH … Changeup was something of a go-to pitch for him early, especially against LHH; indistinguishable from fastball out of his hand with great arm action and some late life — run and tumble at the plate … Worked quickly, especially early on through the first 3-4 innings; great tempo with sense of urgency to attack hitters … Lost tempo and some command when working from the stretch, particularly later in the game; more apt to leave pitches up in the zone and flattened out with plane/life with runners on base; tendency to rush to the plate some at that point … Former two-way player who is still a good athlete; moves off the mound well; quick reactions on balls hit up the middle; still a good overall athlete … After College of the Sequoias, Sagun Gainey is committed to Long Beach State for his junior and senior seasons beginning in 2019; he drew serious MLB Draft interest out of high school but my sense is it has waned a bit at COS; shot at getting back on MLB Draft radar in 2019 and /or 2020 with Long Beach State. Definite pitchability and solid repertoire; shot to be a pro arm one day.
