Good size; some strength through his lower half helps drive to the plate; little bit of room to grow into body and should pick up some strength. Worked from the stretch the entire time in my look; high three-quarters/nearly over the top release point. Hides the ball well from hand break to release; even without great velo, jumps on hitters quickly at times and proved difficult to pick up out of the hand, particularly for RHH … Sat 82-88 mph with fastball in my May look; paired it with a 67-71 mph breaking ball and a 72-76 mph changeup, both of which he had decent feel for throughout … Some mechanical issues getting on top of the ball and releasing out in front consistently; serious downhill plane makes it tough for hitters to square up when he does get on top, but inconsistent there with arm lagging behind to the plate. Fastball is straight otherwise, but plays up considerably when down in the zone and he takes advantage of that downhill plane from release point. Command improvements imperative to that end … Showed early feel for breaking ball for a strike; more of a curve than a slider with 12-to-6 break, though it doesn’t have a real big hump. Fairly consistent depth to the pitch, though; will miss some bats, particularly against RHH. Plays up when it’s down in the zone here, too, because of near-overhand release point … Strong feel for changeup; good life to it with tumble and arm-side run late; good depth here too, as with the rest of the repertoire as it’s played up when commanded down in the zone. Enough feel for changeup to miss some bats; good arm action sells the pitch and he drew some remarkably awkward swings in my look … Kaivon Kealoha probably doesn’t have enough velo/stuff to fit in a Division I setting — at least not yet — but he knows how to pitch. As with teammate Cassius Shy, consider Kealoha another young arm with advanced off-speed feel relative to the level; off-speed quality and consistency to the corners here really made these two Taft College arms some of the better, more consistent off-speed looks I’ve seen in JuCo ball.
