May 2, 2018 — Modesto Nuts (High-A California League)
Nice, efficient 2018 Cal League debut in my May 2 look during a weekday morning game. Sat 89-92 with his four-seam fastball, paired it with an 88-90 two-seam fastball, a 74-75 curveball, and a changeup I never got a velo read on in a two-inning stint … Works quickly; strong, powerful kid who pushes the pace a little bit … Curveball is fine; good feel for it with some depth, and the velo drop is a nice change of pace to hitters combined with the eye level play he’s getting from the hump. Threw a couple nice backdoor breakers to LHH that got guys frozen and buckling. That said, pitch lacked that real hard, late wipeout break and may not miss as many bats against better hitters until it gets harder and sharper. Good start here with some feel for spin; definite room for improvement … Fastball isn’t overpowering, but I like the way it jumps out of his hand; think there’s some velo still to come because of it; don’t want to go so far as to say Austin Hutchison could see as big a velo jump in Modesto as Art Warren did a year ago, but it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s considerable improvement over the next year up into the mid-90s.
