April 25-26, 2018 — Stockton Ports (High-A, California League)
Way too old for High-A; split time between three levels so far in 2018 for the Oakland Athletics; versatile guy who can fit a few molds; good athleticism overall. Played third base in my looks this year, but long history at shortstop, second base, and in the outfield; if there’s any step forward for Melvin Merceds, it’ll be thanks to real defensive versatility … Good runner who sets the table with his foot speed; timed 4.07 up the line from the LHH box, 4.29 and 4.34 on the turn, 7.77 home to second, and 11.19 home to third (sliding triple, safe), all timed as LHH … Not much to see at the plate; compact swing, perhaps a little bit of line drive utility, but he’s limited there and should be seen as a glove-first org depth option all the way. Made a couple nice plays at third base in my late April look; moves well on the ball with quick reactions, good first steps. Intense competitor and natural spark plug; really needs to get back to playing against better/older competition if he’s to have any big league future, though; window’s closing.
