Picked up off waivers by the Los Angeles Angels last December after spending the first few years of his career in the Chicago White Sox minor league system … Big kid, works very quickly; good tempo pushes the pace on hitters. Efficient; strike thrower. Three-quarters release from conventional delivery, working from the first base side of the rubber … Fastball sat 90-95 in my May look, paired with an 84-87 change, 74-77 curve, and 82-85 slider; also timed 1.59 – 1.64 to the plate with runners on first base … Showed more slider than curveball through outing; didn’t throw curve very much; slider is sharp with some tilt, shows feel for working side to side with it. Fastball is the main attraction here, though; no-nonsense guy who attacks hitters with it, pitch explodes to the plate and really jumps on guys; good power behind it with some sneaky velo. Some life to it running back over arm-side, too; sawed off a few RHH in this outing with heavy, boring fastball back in off the plate … Great first impression with clean, quick four-inning outing here; love him as a buy-low waiver addition. Ceiling likely more towards relief role with power fastball/slider combo, but command profile will allow him to work multiple innings; Matt Ball could quietly turn into an interesting swingman for the Los Angeles Angels in a couple years.
