uc san diego baseball prospects news 1 tyler durna scouting report
Prospect: Tyler Durna
Position: First Base
Organization: UC San Diego
Height/Weight: 6’0”, 200 lbs.
Bats/Throws: L/L
Age/DOB: Junior (Four-Year)
Acquired/Hometown: Chino Hills, CA (Ruben Ayala HS)

May 9-11, 2018 — UC San Diego Tritons (NCAA Division II, CCAA Tournament)
Solid first base defender with good feel around the bag; maybe a bit on the smaller side for it size-wise but holds his own over there with good hands, clean shovels, consistent range, etc. Smooth with good lateral movement; real shot to develop into above-average/plus pro defender with some range and good reaction/reads … Timed 4.27 and 4.30 up the line from the LHH box; not remarkable foot speed but works for his game; better lateral quickness in field … Plenty of pull power in his offensive game; aggressive hitter who likes to hack but still shows a decent understanding of when/where to do that; shows some strike zone discipline with good pitch tracking. Will cover the full plate and go the other way at times as necessary, but really wants to pull the ball; opponents had some pretty radical shifts on him during the CCAA Tournament in my look. Made sense; above-average pull power to right field with ability to lift the ball and real bat speed to attack when given that opportunity … Solid all around, Tyler Durna would make a solid first base addition for an org in this year’s MLB Draft coming out of UC San Diego; if he continues to produce pop in the pros, he’ll prove to be a nice second/third-day find.

[…] McCauley is strike thrower with a similar profile to many pitchers the Cubs have targeted the past few years. He is a draft-eligible sophomore so he will have some leverage in negotiations. Durna is a smooth fielding first baseman with a high contact approach a the plate. He only struck out 25 times this season. A bit undersized in comparison to most at the position, but he does possess some pull power. Scouting report on Baseball Census. […]
