March 25, 2018 — Florida Gulf Coast University (NCAA Division I, Atlantic Sun Conference)
Big, strong kid; broad shoulders, good musculature, near final physical form but with plenty of bulk on his body that manifests itself as decent raw power from the right side of the plate. Patient, mature hitter who will work deep counts; content to see a few pitches, won’t stress out working deep/behind in counts; fairly mature approach for the level, understands when he’s being pitched around, etc. Will chase though; pitch recognition troubles at points in my look, struggles on breaking balls. Would love to see more bat speed and explosiveness through swing, but natural power present with good hand & wrist strength/barrel manipulation that can get it done; OK plate coverage for contact, but bulk of his raw will come pretty radically to pull side … Natural defensive first baseman and works fine there; for me, unlikely to see much time elsewhere; probably doesn’t move well enough to play outfield with any regularity. Timed 4.32 up the line from the RHH box; 4.62 on the turn. Jay Hayes may be a better MLB Draft candidate after one more year at Florida Gulf Coast University, but worth writing up now should an org want to add a late-round college power bat with some offensive upside.
