March, 2018 — Minnesota Twins (2018 MiLB Spring Training)
Background in bullpen work, relief role profiles well in future ahead. Three-quarters release point with some cross-body deception at landing and delivery; slightly undersized; fills the zone and challenges hitters with multiple pitches. Fastball 91-94 in my spring training look; pretty straight pitch with occasional arm-side run. Paired it with a 79-82 sharp curveball; good feel for depth but without a ton of break there; sharp, hard, best of his three off-speed looks. Also showed an 84-88 hard slider with some tilt and late, hard (but small) break at the plate, and a firm 85-86 changeup without much life aside from some arm-side run … Sharp, firm arsenal across the board with power behind it; slider is very hard without a ton of depth, almost more like a cutter. Both breaking balls are hard with good arm action to sell them; will pitch with them off the fastball as well as going back-to-back with one or the other … At his best, Colton Davis looks like a middle relief arm who could work multiple innings in the big leagues; with some added power in his arsenal, perhaps there’s a shot for late-inning work at ceiling with the Minnesota Twins, but he’ll need to add velo for that to happen. Landed on the disabled list early in 2018 and he’s already 24 years old at High-A, so it bears watching to see if Davis can move relatively quickly to more age-appropriate competition; if not, likely organizational depth ahead.
