June 6, 2018 — San Luis Obispo Blues (California Collegiate League)
Western Carolina University sent Chase Walter to the CCL in the summer of 2018 to play for the San Luis Obispo Blues. The big righty logged 85.2 innings in his redshirt freshman season this past spring for the Catamounts after coming over from Spartanburg Methodist JC, finishing 3-7 with a 5.46 ERA in 17 games (14 starts) while posting a 74:49 K:BB ratio … Big, physical frame with plenty of height that gives him good downward plane out of high three-quarters arm slot. Arm-side life to his fastball with some feel for two off-speed pitches, particularly a slider, and while command profile generally needs some work, control is good enough for now to challenge hitters with entire repertoire … Four-seam fastball 88-92 in my June look, paired with an 85-90 two-seam fastball, a 76-79 slider, and an 80-82 changeup … Timed him 1.44 – 1.50 to the plate with runner on first base … Loves to challenge hitters with his fastball; throws it a lot; pitch will run back to arm-side some with decent downward movement thanks to plane; not overpowering now, but not far from it — likely to see a nice velo bump as he grows into his body and builds some strength and explosiveness through lower half in particular … Slider ahead of changeup right now; not as much feel for changeup within the zone with tumble, but he can show it here and there as necessary. Slider is a hard, sharp pitch with some tilt; good complement to fastball and enough depth to miss some bats, particularly RHH … Would do well to remain a starter at Western Carolina University to build innings and feel for his arsenal, but I think the long-term post-MLB Draft projection for Chase Walter comes as a high-leverage power reliever. His fastball-slider combo already feels ideal for late-inning work, there are some command issues present already here, and by the time he’s draft-eligible (2019, though more likely to be ready to go in 2020), it’s realistic to expect he’ll be working in the mid-90s with a power slider.
