Sidearm/nearly submarine look from the right side with decent two-pitch mix and great competitiveness. Intense, high-adrenaline competitor on the mound; challenges hitters and fills up the zone, ideal look for late-inning relief work at the college level. Undersized guy, but plays up role with quirkiness and deception. Big-school guy form the University of Arkansas who has the potential to flourish working multiple days in a row with low-stress arm angle and great athleticism coming off the mound … Fastball sat 84-87 in my early June look; paired it with a promising 72-76 slider. Good sink and arm-side life on fastball; can manipulate the pitch a bit for more run or more sink depending on situation and hitter; couple different looks to it that work for ground ball contact. Not overpowering on velo alone, but some sneaky speed to the plate with very quick, herky-jerky mechanics that provide good deception, particularly against RHH … Encouraging break on his slider, typically a tough pitch for sidearm/submarine guys to master. Real bender there; starts behind RHH to land in zone; tough pitch for them to stay on and square up. Will float and stay on plane, but velo differential and break path can create weak contact … Timed 1.29 – 1.36 to the plate; holds runners just fine. Great athlete coming off the mound to field his position. High-adrenaline guy who loves to compete, plainly wants to be in tight situations … As with most sidearm/sub arms, will be a challenge for him to face opposite-handed hitters, but Angus Denton has some pitchability and potential as a reliever going forward for the University of Arkansas; perhaps with some added velo there’s a shot at pro ball for him working in highly-specialized matchup relief, but if it happens, that’ll likely come via free agency at the end of his Arkansas career rather than through the MLB Draft.
