Team/Organization: Lancaster JetHawks (Colorado Rockies)
League/Level: California League (High-A)
Scouting Notes: Big jump to High-A in first shot at full season ball after being drafted by the Rockies last summer; hit the ground running early in April but has come back down to earth with a tough slump from late May on into June … First pitch hacker right now (in June); not a great approach, really going through it; looks uncomfortable in the box and wants to get out early, avoid deep counts or getting down to two strikes; learning curve to adjust to High-A pitching has hit. Broader skills are there, though; generally OK feel for the barrel, tracks pitches well, good athlete with quick-twitch and good hands. Lacks real power and long-term shouldn’t be seen an offensive force, but, outside inevitable slumps, Alan Trejo could turn into a serviceable bottom-of-the-order bench/platoon bat who provides most of his value with the glove … Timed 4.25 up the line from the RHH box in June; decent runner, OK foot speed up the line, better first step/lateral quickness defensively. Defensive range at shortstop (both directions) is impressive; encouraging to see he’s still working hard with the glove even during prolonged slump; understands where his value will come and how he can help a team even when times are lean at the plate. Strong arm at shortstop with good accuracy; moves well deep into the hole and throws OK from there. Good situational awareness when ball is hit to him with runners on base. Smooth, quick movements up the middle with quick exchange, clean releases to target while on the run … Current slump is a snapshot, and not held against him broadly, but Alan Trejo is still likely a utility-man or platoon/backup infield option at ceiling (45 FV) for the Rockies; value will come from his glove rather than bat; must do just enough offensively to survive as secondary option; likely up-and-down future should he fall short of ceiling.
