Smaller than list size; high/max effort reliever with some power in his repertoire and good arm strength in my look. A low-round MLB Draft choice in 2016, Grant Gavin has moved through the Kansas City Royals organization very quickly thanks to ability to execute on a 90-94 fastball, an 80-82 overhand curveball, and a 77-80 changeup. The fastball is hard with good downward plane from that decently high arm angle, but also shows itself to be relatively straight without fade/run to arm-side to tie up RHH; velo is decent with some sneaky explosion to the plate; can get guys chasing/overpowered when pitch is sequenced well late. Struggles to finish at times, will leave fastball up — but, can use that to his advantage playing with eye level and dropping in curveball on occasion … Curveball is hard and spins tight, but lacks significant depth; small, shallow break to it that’ll get off (and past) some bats, but isn’t quite the power hammer you’d expect in a high-leverage relief arm. Pitch may improve soon; he clearly trusts/likes the curve and could develop even better feel for spinning it … Changeup is firm without a ton of life or effectiveness save from speed differential when compared to fastball; more of a show-me at this point, limited value here probably only against LHH without tuns of tumble or real fade back to arm-side … Overall repertoire shows promise for short-stint work, but needs more development/nuance to be above-average; to that end, in this late May look, Gavin had a couple long at-bats with guys that he just couldn’t get to swing and miss once he got ahead; anecdotal, of course, but indicative of question as to whether he’s got enough to miss bats at the game’s highest level. That being said, Grant Gavin has some of the makings of a potential power arsenal for the Kansas City Royals; slap a 45 FV grade on him now (middle relief) with maybe some setup potential ahead at ceiling (50 FV) assuming he can build out enough velo to reach that point in the next few years; regardless, Gavin has a shot, and producing this quickly in Double-A doesn’t hurt.
