Declan Kearney Scouting Report & Game Video
Dates Observed: June 20, 2018
Team/Organization: Southern California Catch (Azusa Pacific University)
League/Level: College Summer Baseball
Scouting Notes: Thin, lean, very projectable frame beyond that — more power and velo coming as he adds weight in the next couple years; height’s fine with upside to build strength towards rotation durability down the road … Fastball 84-89 in this mid-June look; paired with 73-76 curveball, and 77-79 changeup. Timed 1.21 – 1.30 to the plate with runner on first; holds runners OK and mixes tempos/timing with maturity … Fastball is an early choice to establish counts, shows good arm-side life and run back with some ability to back-door and spot up. Curve is 11-to-5, but smaller with depth but not a ton of break or eye level change; could spin it bigger, but good feel side-to-side with ability to bury it when ahead in the count. Went to curve more often than changeup based on my look; changeup is third pitch right now but has some usability against LHH with fade to arm-side … Stuff is average or below right now across the board but shows upside to grow into decent repertoire; already, he’s an excellent game manager with a strong command profile; challenges hitters and throws strikes, draws contact early in counts and off the barrel. One of those sneaky-good pitchers who doesn’t wow you with his stuff or velo, but you look up, and he’s gone seven innings and left with the lead. Competitive kid, doesn’t back down from good opponents, rises to the occasion … Bounce-back kid from the University of Oregon; injured there, apparently dealt with thoracic outlet syndrome or something similar and is only now building back real arm strength in 2018. Likely some more velo ahead; upside is there to keep an eye out, may be a good MLB Draft look for 2020.
