League/Level: Texas League (Double-A)
Scouting Notes: Thicker, less athletic build; no good room to grow into his body; lacks physical upside/projection and already aged out past growth; will have some work to do to maintain physical form as he ages … Pitch-to-contact guy with average fastball, and below-average stuff across the board; relatively conventional mechanics with little by way of deception or quirkiness coming out of the ‘pen. Fastball 89-95 (typically 90-92) in this look here, paired with 80-83 changeup and 82-86 slider. Clocked 1.47 – 1.52 to the plate with runner on first base … Fastball command OK with a little bit of arm-side life to it; he can work it up there in the mid-90s and will challenge hitters, but pitch is generally straight and on one plane … Slider inconsistent; too many spinning out and backing up in this look; he struggled to get out in front and extend on it to show break out to glove side consistently … Command struggles early in spot start here, never really recovered. History of being a pretty solid strike thrower, but stuff betrayed him in this look, didn’t show out very well and often left pitches up when he did find the zone … Long term, considering the context of his age and career to date, Andres Machado probably best fits in a low-leverage long relief role. He reached the Majors with the Kansas City Royals for the first time in 2017; for my money, I far preferred teammate Pedro Fernandez to Machado based on this Northwest Arkansas look. If Andres Machado is to ever get back to the big leagues again, it’ll likely be in the back-end of the bullpen working to eat innings with a below-average repertoire.
