Scouting Notes: Interesting addition; signed late out of the Dominican Republic, made pro debut at 25, needs to move quickly from here to be seriously considered as a prospect. Works quickly, gets after hitters, pushes the tempo especially with nobody on base; spot start in this look, but virtual certainty he’ll be a reliever going forward. Intriguing power profile out of the bullpen that might play up in short stints; fastball sat 92-95 in four-inning outing here, paired with 81-84 slider and hard, firm 85-87 changeup. Two looks to the plate with runner on first; 1.09 – 1.14 on fastest move, also shows a slower move at 1.33 – 1.39 that allows him to get to balance a bit more consistently … Command profile struggles some — couldn’t consistently get ball out to glove-side to establish corner, for one — but decent pitchability with some feel for mixing speeds and incorporating slider/changeup on second time through the order here. Some recoil through relatively violent delivery; mechanics destined for short-stint work rather than long relief/spot start duties such as this … Slider life OK, shows some depth with modest ability to get off the barrel; changes more firm without tumble, but shows arm-side life with velo differential … All told, I saw Carlos Sano in the wrong role in this look (as a spot starter) but he threw the ball pretty well considering, and he represents an intriguing off-the-radar arm for the San Francisco Giants moving forward; definite middle relief potential (45 FV) or perhaps slightly better at ceiling; bears watching to see if he can move relatively quickly in the next twelve months considering his age.
