Team/Organization: Inland Valley Buccaneers (Southern California Collegiate Baseball League)
League/Level: College Summer Baseball
Scouting Notes: Big kid, good frame, OK physical strength now with lean look and a shot to put a little bit more weight/strength on before final physical form. Practically lost last two years; barely pitched at San Diego State as a true freshman in 2017 before kicking back to Citrus College this past spring; only threw seven innings for the Owls, and now looking for a four-year bounce-back beginning in the fall of 2018 with two years of eligibility left; dark horse lefty well off the radar who really needs competitive innings again, but with some workable, desirable traits and tools … Fastball comfortably 85-88 in my look here; touched 89 several times. High three-quarters release with occasional plane from height, but command profile too inconsistent to really take advantage of late life down in the strike zone right now. Some arm-side run to it, too; sizzles and explodes right at the plate with late velo from extension; gets on hitters relatively quickly at times, but inconsistent as he’ll fail to follow through, recoil hard, etc. … Changeup 76-77 with decent life, good arm action; didn’t throw it a ton, but drew a couple very poor RHH swings over the top; shows tumble late to arm-side, tunnels OK with fastball and sold well out of the hand. Need to see more of the changeup; real potential here for usable look against RHH … Curveball 72-74 in this look; went to breaking ball quite a bit, but it needs some work. Too slow, too loopy, lacks late life and bite. Definite downward break to the pitch, but break starts early and bend is easy to track for hitters; pitch won’t miss nearly as many barrels as it should. Needs to significantly tighten it up; might do well to truly convert it to a slider, throw it hard, try to let it eat in the upper 70s. Adjustment to be made there … Above all, Hayden Petrovick needs innings and experience, and he ought to find a four-year school that can give him that. He’s got good velo, some pro projection as a bullpen arm (command profile is too far behind), and some real upside to get hitters out the next two years; will Hayden Petrovick find the right fit and get the most out of the rest of his career?
