Organization: Riverside City College
Height/Weight: 5’11”, 185 lbs.

Age/DOB: Sophomore (2-year JuCo)
Acquired/Hometown: Ramona HS (Riverside, CA)

Fastball 86-93 (consistent 88-91) … Curveball 74-79 (consistent 75-77) … Changeup 80-83 … To the plate with runner on first: 1.24, 1.24, 1.26, 1.28, 1.29, 1.30, 1.30, 1.31, 1.33.

Worked from stretch the entire time. Fairly high-effort mechanics; loose, short arm action with good arm speed through release. Explosive leg drive to the plate. High three-quarters release; will throw against his body a bit off stiff front leg and fairly significant re-coil on follow through … Fastball shows hard run arm-side; really bores in on RHH; will get out of control to arm-side and appeared tough/inconsistent to corral in my look. Tunnels fastball well with changeup when right; sneaky-hard velocity touching 93 a few times … Changeup can also get out of control with run and fade to arm side; tough to corral and will take off on him. Flashed good arm action on changeup to LHH; makings of a solid third pitch when right, but inconsistent in my look … Gets surprisingly good, late depth on curveball with encouraging hard break; sharp, even late at times; comfortable throwing curve to both RHH and LHH. Curveball will miss bats at this level; for me, probably needs to be thrown a bit harder in pro ball; fun to imagine it developing into power slider with tilt and serious depth in the low- to mid-80s … Ultimately, makings of a power arsenal with relatively less command feel and max effort through mechanics combine to suggest a relief future in pro ball. Daniel Martinez is a two-way guy right now with Riverside City College; he’ll benefit greatly from focusing solely on mound work at the pro level. Likely more velo to come in the next few years; high-leverage late-inning relief ceiling well within reach. Decent 2018 MLB Draft arm to follow.
