Scouting Notes & Game Video
November 19-21, 2018 intrasquad scrimmages
Fastball 86-88 … Changeup 79-80 … Curveball 74-76 … Slider (no game look) … 1.41 – 1.49 to the plate with a runner on first … Three-quarters release; athletic, powerful build with repeatable delivery. Really cleaned up his arm action since I saw him two years ago; quick, efficient path up to release now, repeatable to release point with ability to get full extension out front and really play up pitch life through finish … Abundant pitch life across the board; late, sharp arm-side run to fastball with considerable sink when down, eats up RHH; changeup tunnels in similar path, is much improved now compared to my last look, as well; flashes plus, late tumble, sold with good arm action. Curveball is sharp with late break, tight spin; 12-to-6 look with relatively less depth, but moves very late; throws it hard, potential plus pitch that gets hitters off-balance, good command within zone; uses it sparingly now, well worth going to it a bit more. Reportedly working on a slider too, though haven’t seen it yet this fall … Absolutely eats up RHH with weak contact against hard stuff on inner-half; ground ball machine with heavy sink, complementary changeup, control profile to pound the zone and enough command feel to get in arm-side consistently. Will miss bats with breaking stuff & velo as well. Already flashes pro-quality power-sinker, real shot to dominate with it as he further refines command profile, particularly from the stretch … Slow to plate with runners on, but varies tempos and holds runners OK, will pick over, etc. Good athlete, gets off the mound and fields his position well. Strong kid; pro frame; will add more strength to lower half; durable enough for a rotation role. Good competitor, good grades, great makeup; checks all the right boxes off the field and on intangibles. High-character kid; popular teammate; leadership attributes.
Overall Future Potential: 5 OFP — Division I Starter/MLB Draft. Admittedly probably a bit higher than most on Jackson Hickert with a 5 OFP here, but I’ve seen him pitch for parts of three years now at Ventura College and he truly has the stuff, the size, and the competitiveness to work his way into pro ball, though that’ll most likely be after his stop at a four-year school beyond VC. He needs to continue to add velo and that’ll come as he builds back arm strength (he missed almost all of 2018 with nagging arm troubles, though he’s healthy now); reportedly been up to 91 earlier this fall. Stuff across the board has pro-quality life, particularly that power sinker — with more velo, that’s a plus pitch that’ll give Hickert a shot to dominate righties at the next level. Relative unknown prospect right now coming off redshirt/injury year; well worth a long look from Division I programs seeking big-time upside in a buy-low kid with strong makeup and the competitive fire to match his ceiling.
